Scripture - 2 Sam. 12:14 But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die.”
Observation - After David sexually sinned with Bathsheba, he covered his tracks by having her husband killed and marrying her. While no one was probably aware of the full story, including Bathsheba, God revealed the incident to the Prophet, who then rebuked David. While there are many interesting aspects to this story, verse 14 includes a critical feature as to how God clears His Name when His people sin, all before an unbelieving world. It was made clear that David's sinful actions would give God's enemies opportunity to blaspheme. David, always vocal about the greatness of the Lord and his love for Him, had just given those who did not fear the Lord plenty of wood for their fires. David's sin could further damage the perception that the Lord's enemies had of Him. It became necessary for God to defend His own character in light of David's actions, so he made it clear that the child born to David would die. A harsh move on the part of God, but a necessary one so that the nay-sayers would see that even David would be punished for his sin.
Application - this account is a reminder to me that people learn about God through my words and my actions. While my words do count for something, there will always be critics standing in the shadows waiting for me to sin, giving a prybar to poke holes in all that I have said previously about our great God. That needs to continue to motivate me to live my life before others knowing that they are watching. I need to guard from personal sin because it will impact others impressions of the Lord. I don't want the Lord to have to bring judgement so they can see that He is a holy all-knowing God who doesn't wink at sin. The scripture teaches that we are His epistles, read and known by all men. I want what they read to give proper representation.
Prayer - Lord, help me be mindful that others are watching, looking, gathering information about You as I live my life. Help me live in such a way that people receive an accurate depiction of You. Help me to avoid the types of failures that require your judgement in my life. People are already confused as to who you are. Help my life to bring greater clarity, not confusion.
